Created for iPhone, iPad and Android, Redken Stylestation was designed in a way so as to offer consumer friendly assistance to stylists in their communication with clients. It allows stylists to work closely with clients to create their desired hair color and get the perfect formula allowing them to mix the product immediately.

This core feature, The Formula Finder, allows the stylist to select their client’s current hair color followed by their desired hair color. The app then calculates the perfect formula from the Chromatics product line and presents the stylist with the exact product ratios to mix. Other features of the app include a Lookbook section, which has both signature styles as well as an area for the stylist to upload photos of their own clients’ new hairstyles.

A Timer feature lets the colorist program various alarms for each client, so they can easily keep track of how long the product needs to be in their hair. The Consultation section is a resource for colorists to teach their clients about hair maintenance as well as analyze their style and hair goals for the perfect look. Finally, The Breakroom is the Redken stylist’s social media network. With the app, it’s easy to sign in and engage with other professionals on anything and everything hair related.In addition to building iPhone, iPad and Android versions of the application, Firstborn created a custom CMS, which allows Redken to add new color options as more product lines are released. This CMS lets Redken personnel dynamically create new hair color options and then export them out to the iOS and Android applications. With the addition of the CMS, the Stylestation becomes a platform that is both flexible and scalable as Redken adds more product lines to their hair color inventory.

Redken released the app on both Android and iOS (iPhone and iPad) platforms and targeted it specifically at colorists and stylists, who were notified of the release either via Redken’s email database or as a an update from the version of the app. Adoption of both Android and iOS versions of the app was extremely rapid, with user numbers eclipsing those of the previous version within two weeks. Total users for all OS versions currently stands at around 9,000, which exceeded expectations for the targeted user base.
