By making use of the latest web technologies such as WebGL and WebRTC we created a mobile first experience. Fans can explore the Middle-earth map freely and zoom in on many of the locations from the movies.
They can choose to follow in the footsteps of their heroes and experience some of the most iconic scenes.
A third way to engage is to reenact the many battles across Middle-earth. A unique peer to peer solution allow fans from all over the world to challenge each other in a real-time battle game.
Outcome
This project showcases how a holistic approach with attention to user behaviour, creative ambition, and technological advancement can create new value and audience relationship for entertainment and technology while pushing the mobile web forward.
4.1 million unique visitors the first month. +50 000 browser downloads the first two months.
Strategy
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” was one of Warner Bros’ most important theatrical movie releases for 2014 and an opportunity to do something special for their biggest fans. In partnership with Google they set out to showcase the cultural relevance of the last Hobbit film in an immersive online experience that captures the scale and grandeur of the films, powered by the modern mobile web.
There were two target groups:
? Fans, to enjoy an interactive experience across all devices that allowed them to be truly immersed in Middle-earth.
? Developers, to inspire them by showcasing the power of the latest web technologies.
By making use of the latest web technologies such as WebGL and WebRTC we created a mobile first experience for the browser - A realtime interactive map of Middle-earth.
