Execution
Avoid Humans was programmed with four location categories—nightlife, food, coffee and refuge. Our algorithm calculated several data sets—number of check-ins, time of day, happy hour versus non happy hour, weekday versus weekend—and assigned a real-time color icon for each establishment to indicate the level of humans present. Users were then given GPS directions via Google Maps to the least crowded location.
Outcome
- 3+ million Twitter impressions by the end of the festival.
- Nearly one in four attendees used Avoid Humans.
- Top three most talked about startups at SXSW via Twitter.
- Awarded one of the seven biggest wins in SXSW history.
Strategy
During South By Southwest, our hometown of Austin, Texas, becomes overcrowded with festivalgoers. They cram into every restaurant and bar, making it nearly impossible to enjoy anything. To solve this problem, we created the anti Foursquare using a mobile web app that reverses check-in data from existing social platforms like Foursquare and Instagram, giving you the nearest establishments with the least amount of people. We called it Avoid Humans.
