BriefExplanation

Like thousands of girls in Thailand and across the world, Rock was born in a man’s body. Sunsilk tells her life story from the point of view of her hair. Every inch of hair is an important milestone on her journey to womanhood. The longer it gets, the more feminine she is.

EntrySummary

Transgenders have gained the love and respect of their girlfriends and through the years have been increasingly accepted by Thai society, but the same cannot be said of their families.

To communicate is long hair variant, Sunsilk taps into that cultural tension to tell an insightful hair story and show support for everyone’s right to explore, regardless of gender or choice.

We see Rock’s back, chatting and laughing happily with his girl friends at the school’s common room.

VO: Mostly fun.

While talking to her friends, a teenage boy comes in with a candy and tells Rock that someone has asked to pass it to her. Her girlfriends start to tease her.

VO: Mostly…

In front of the school flag pole, a school teacher cuts Rock’s hair with a pair of scissors, making it terribly uneven on purpose as punishment. Tears roll down Rock’s cheeks.

The pageant team gives Rock the cue to go out on stage.

She’s ready.

Camera slowly spins around to reveal Rock in her full pageant dress.

We now see Rock’s close-up shot.

It’s the first time the audience sees her face in a frontal shot.

Rock is finally a woman now.

a video clip of the pageant, with the message.

Text Message: Hey, isn’t this your son?

At home Dad is looking at the phone.

Rock walks forward confidently, passing through the stage curtain.

From Rock passing through the curtains, we transition Rock opening the door to her house, dressed as a woman. She is now feeling confident to speak to her dad.

Rock’s father is sitting at the dinner table, as if waiting for her.

Rock gathers her confidence and then says:

ROCK: Dad, I went to a competition...

And I got this.

Rock hands her father the trophy.

Her father looks at her, his face expressionless,

and then walks away into his room.

VO: By now, you should have realized…

being yourself will hurt the one you love the most.

Rock, in shock, does not know what to do and turns to leave.

ROCK: I’ve never asked my father how it feels to have a son like me.

I’ve been hiding, pretending…

Murmurs could be heard from the people in the interview room.

ROCK: I just hope someday he will know and accept me for who I am.

Cut back to the present. Her father hands Rock her old doll.

Rock looks at her father, overwhelmed and tearing up.

The father and daughter hug. Dolly out.
