Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the radio or audio work.

LEGO Playwaves is a world-first, Google voice experience that lets kids turn old LEGO bricks into new sonic adventures. Kids can access Lego Playwaves by simply saying “Hey Google, talk to LEGO Playwaves” on any Google-assistant device. This will then launch the app, which allows kids to explore five different sonic worlds: Magical Kingdom, Downtown Detective, Ace Racer, Space Academy, and Animal Kingdom.

In each world, kids are given missions they can play along to using their LEGO bricks. A narrator prompts them to use voice commands to progress through each mission.

As part of every mission, kids will be asked to build things. If they don’t want to play a mission, they can access ‘Free Play Mode’. This provides kids with background music and SFX based on the world they’re in. Kids can even request SFX in the world as they play.

Translation. Provide a full English translation of any audio.

Please use the following link to access the Google spreadsheet, which contains scripts to the five immersive worlds,10 missions, dialogue, and SFX used throughout LEGO Playwaves.

Please tell us about the social behaviour that inspired the work

Studies showed kids on average spend 30% of their waking hours in front of a screen. And with the recent COVID-19 outbreak and the lockdowns it subsequently caused around the world, that increased to an average of 70%.

Parents have real concerns of how much time their kids spend playing video games, watching TV, and using mobile phones. Doctors have their concerns too with research suggesting excessive screen time can be linked to loss of social and behavioural skills, irregular sleep, obesity, even violence.

That’s why LEGO wanted to help pull kids away from screens and reignite their imaginations.

We knew 500 million people every month around the world access a Google voice assistant, which is why we chose the device. And by allowing kids to use their old LEGO bricks, we made the ability to play along to LEGO Playwaves even more accessible.
