Asociación Grupo Ermita de Alzheimer is an organization in Guatemala that provides resources to families of patients with Alzheimer. 80% of people who suffer from this disease are under their family’s care.

Grupo Ermita is constantly searching for resources and initiatives that may contribute to solving some of the challenges caregivers face with their patients: bathing and dressing them, providing dental care and helping them with their personal hygiene specially when the patient suffers from urinary incontinence.

So, in order to make their job a little easier, we developed a Memory Diaper.

We came up with an idea that could help have better control over patients in the advanced stages of Alzheimer that were suffering from incontinence so they could be better taken care of. Memory Diaper is an intelligent diaper that sends a notification to the caregiver’s smartphone at the precise moment that the patient needs to be changed.

The only thing the caregiver needs to do is to download the Memory Diaper app and sync it via Bluetooth to the micro-controller. When the micro-controller senses humidity in the diaper it alerts caregivers by sending them a text message with encouraging and thankful words. This app allows the messages to be changed so the notification is different every time.

Patients who are in the advance stage of Alzheimer and Dementia suffer of incontinence making it necessary for them to use diapers. If their diapers are not changed frequently, this may have serious consequences on their health.

Memory Diapers make the job of changing diapers easier for caregivers of patients with Alzheimer. They can be considered a necessary tool to avoid future physical problems dignifying the life of the patients by giving them back the voice that they have lost due to this illness.

Fundación Ermita de Alzheimer has positioned itself as a pioneer organization in Guatemala devoted to taking care of the dignity of patients who suffer from Alzheimer and for providing not only physical and psychological support but also developing technological solutions that allow caregivers to improve their quality of life.

This invention is currently going through a production process so it can be commercialized massively.

Fundación Ermita is a non-profit organization that funds its programs with corporate contributions and individual charitable donations. The creation of this invention increased the contributions received from affiliated companies by 40% and individual charitable donations by 80% compared to the first trimester of last year.
