Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the radio or audio work.

The spoken word poet FeliSpeaks takes us through all the safe spaces, places, and queer communities that the LGBTI+ people need to build in order to have somewhere safe and secure to be themselves, without the threat of physical violence.

Translation. Provide a full English translation of any audio.

Somewhere over the rainbow,

The night continues underground; The gays are meeting for drinks in bars designed for just

them, and men with gentle knuckles,

Because we’re still scared.

Somewhere over the rainbow,

Drag queens cram into tight spaces -

There’s safety in the number of people you don’t have to explain your love to,

Because we’re still scared.

Somewhere over the rainbow,

All of Dorothy’s friends have come down from the high; the mighty propped us up on.

We’ve packed up and pocketed, the streamers from the day of celebration gone.

Because we’re still scared.

Somewhere over the rainbow,

Avoiding violet bruises and bloody lips,

We find the tribes we BelongTo and make families of queer friends,

Because we’re still scared.

Of Bleeding Rainbow Blood.

A performance on behalf of BeLonG To Youth Services, in support of Ireland's LGBTI+ community.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

This performance was played nationwide on June 25th at 11.59am across local and independent stations - almost every single radio station in Ireland. It held the attention of the entire country for 60 seconds.

In Ireland, 1 in 5 people who identify as LGBTI+ have been physically attacked because of their sexuality. These words showed a united message of support for the LGBTI+ community at the end of pride month, after a string of homophobic graffiti darkened the celebrations.A reminder that we must continue to support Pride and LGBTI+ youth charities such BeLonG To Youth Services until everyone can feel equal and safe.

Written and composed by spoken word artist, FeliSpeaks who is a member of the LGBTI+ community.

The brand call to action was performed by Panti Bliss (Rory O’ Neill) a drag queen and LGBTI+ rights ambassador who led the fight for the Marriage Equality vote in 2015.
