Write a short summary of what happens in the radio or audio work.
First, a casting call is held throughout Mexico to search for the best soccer sportscasters who speak native languages. We see the auditions of indigenous people at local radio stations, and then the winners traveling to the city and arriving to the Azteca stadium to narrate the national team matches over the radio in those native languages. Finally, we see indigenous people celebrating Mexico's qualification for the World Cup while listening to the games for the first time in their languages.
Translation. Provide a full English translation of any audio.
Subtitles and explanations are provided in the case study and mp3s.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
In México, native communities have only one reliable way to follow their national team soccer games: Radio.
While many people think that in Mexico only Spanish is spoken, there are 68 native languages. But soccer matches are not broadcast in any of them.
Tell the jury about the casting process.
First, we created radio spots throughout local indigenous communities in Mexico announcing a casting call, searching for the best sportscasters who speak native languages. Then we held the auditions at the local radio stations, and from the 850 people who took a shot to narrate Mexico’s games, we ended up selecting 6 winners from 6 different languages (Maya, Nahuatl, Mixteco, Chatino, Zapoteco and Mixe) with the help of professional sportscasters.
