Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

The film is an ode to the true rockstars of our times. Mothers. The ones who lifted us up, held the band together, kept the stove on fire. Day in and day out, without rest. Dinner demands, lunch and big boss pants. Zoom calls, broom calls. When the shit hit the fans all over the world, and work-life balance went tits up — they were our guiding lights, our icons, our super stars. The ones who kept the show going on. The scenes are like tableaus - frozen moments, raw, human, exposing everything: emotions, puke, ugliness, beauty. They are mothers. But they are also goddesses and warriors.

The voice over describes a day in the life of any mother. There is a parallel to the day in the life of a rockstar, waking up fully dressed in a hotel room, having to get back onto stage, performing all night.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

Italy was the first European country to be hard hit by COVID-19 and is among the countries that have suffered the most serious consequences from the pandemic. In 2020 Italy imposed one of the first national lockdowns and a year later our country is once again struggling to contain the rapid spread of infections. At the height of the pandemic, 31.4% of employees were asked to work from home and 25.1% are still doing so. At the same time, in 2020 Italy has been the country that closed its schools longer than any other in Europe in a desperate bid to contain the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic. And since the beginning of 2021, as Italy battles a third wave, Italian government repeatedly shut all schools in high risk areas, from kindergartens to high schools: at the present time, almost 6 million children and teenagers are experiencing distance learning.

The film is an ode to the true rockstars of our times. Moms. Everywhere. The ones who lifted us up, held the band together, stayed up all night, kept the stove on fire. Day in and day out, without rest. Weekends too. Dinner demands, lunch and big boss pants. Zoom calls, broom calls. When the shit hit the fans all over the world, and work-life balance went tits up — they were our guiding lights, our icons, our darlings, our super stars. The ones who kept the show going on. Until long after midnight.

The scenes are like tableaus. Like paintings. Some maybe still images. Like Terry Richardson pictures, frozen moments, iconic, disturbing, beautiful, raw, human, exposing everything: skin, emotion, puke, ugliness, beauty. Yes, they are moms. But they are also goddesses and warriors.

The voice over describes an arch of a day in the life of mom. Although she is played by different characters. From the moment the alarm rings, to the moment the curtains close. There is a (bit of a) parallel here, to the day in the life of a rockstar, waking up fully dressed in a hotel room, having to get back onto stage, performing, eating, going on stage — and keeping the show going on all night long.

Voice over:

What makes a rockstar?

What are they made of?

One that keeps the band together,

Keeps the fire going.

SOLO – like the guitar

Day after day.

The world is now closed

But they are still in session.

Working hard on a hard day’s night.

With fire in their gut

And a beat in their chest.

Zoom calls.

Broom falls.

Footballs.

And hush,

“I’m on a call Paul!”

A talent, an idol, an icon,

— or just a girl who works a lot damn harder than the rest?

They rock

They roll

Then get back up on stage

And make the damn lunches.

Emails?

They’ve got bunches.

Epidemic. Pandemic.

They be online teaching

- academic.

We put them on pedestals,

on the cover of our magazine,

hold them up high, as if to say -

What is a rockstar?

The answer my friend

is out there blowing wind.

A cheerleader. Ringleader.

Unpaid fucking 3rd grade teacher.

From dusk till down

We hear them roar

The show may be over.

But the mom must go on.

Here’s to the one true rockstar of the year. Your mama.
