BriefExplanation

At the center of this documentary video is the personal story of a pair of real life surfers—father and daughter--who have surfed the Ventura coast for as long as they can remember. Their natural environment means everything to them and they are fierce about protecting it. Verizon’s Networkfleet technology is one way the city is able to protect its environment for these surfers and all the residents of Ventura. The video interweaves the story of the father and daughter surfers and the story of Networkfleet® technology, showcasing the natural beauty of Ventura throughout and the genuine enthusiasm of its residents as they preserve the environment while engaging in real life activities.

EntrySummary

Ventura is a surfing community. We felt that if we could tap into real people from this community we could tell a more compelling story than if we relied on traditional dramatization.

We started with a script to craft the story we wanted to tell. Following the interview process, the cast’s responses were woven into the story, making it stronger, and ultimately more authentic.

Execution

VO SURFER 1: My dad taught me to surf when I was eleven. The environment is everything to me.

VO SURFER 2: We have a lot at stake here. Looking at this beauty in front of me I hope we can protect it.

ETHAN HAWKE VO: Over 100,000 people live in Ventura, California—it’s a place where the environment is valued above all.

VO EH: In 2007, the city of Ventura committed to greatly reduce its ecological footprint --cutting down on CO2 emissions to protect air quality and the fragile ocean environment.

VO EH: As part of this commitment, the city outfitted their public works vehicles with Verizon Networkfleet technology.

SUPER : DENNIS, VENTURA MUNICIPAL FLEET SUPERVISOR

VO DENNIS: A vehicle’s like a person. It’s got vitals, and with Verizon Networkfleet we can monitor the vehicle when it’s going down the road. If there’s a problem with it, we can notify that driver to get that vehicle in before it starts polluting the city. This technology really helps us to protect our environment and the clean air with have in this city.

VO EH: After implementing several environmental initiatives, including Verizon Networkfleet, Ventura saw a 7,000 ton reduction of carbon—that’s the same as removing 1,375 vehicles per year from its streets.

VO EH: Today Ventura is celebrated as a model of sustainability.

VO EH: But there are other roads out there. And the hope is that Ventura is just the start to a greener environment for all of us.

VO SURFER 1: Some day when I have kids, I hope to share with them what my dad has shared with me: To respect the ocean and respect your environment. It all comes down to love.
