BriefExplanation

Having a conversation about aged care is almost as delicate as a person’s ability to hear it.

Throughout life, our parents are often the ones we turn to for help. However, as they get older, the shift from cared-for to caregiver can be challenging.

This radio spot demonstrates how our hearing deteriorates as we get older, and acknowledges the difficulty faced when talking to older people about aged care.

The service helps older Australians access Government subsidised care, and provides people with the resource material they need to have a positive conversation about aged care.

Male V/O: The human ear is a delicate thing. As we age, changes in the inner ear mean that our hearing slowly declines. Armed with this knowledge, we created a radio spot to talk about aged care. A spot which would be broadcast at a frequency of 8,000 hertz. Here is how the spot might sound to older ears.

Female V/O: The following message has been recorded at 8,000 hertz, making it almost inaudible to anyone over the age of 60.

Female V/O: (barely audible): ...That’s because we’re talking about aged care - a topic that can cause anxiety amongst seniors.

Female V/O: (barely audible): If you can hear this message, and have a mum or dad you’re concerned about, speak to St Ives Home Care for a more open conversation. We offer a range of services to help your parents stay in their own home. And we'll help you talk about aging...

Female V/O: (sound normal again): In a way they’ll really hear you.

Male V/O: And here is what the spot might sound like to younger ears.

Female V/O: The following message has been recorded at 8,000 hertz, making it almost inaudible to anyone over the age of 60.

Female V/O (volume down a little): ...That’s because we’re talking about aged care - a topic that can cause anxiety amongst seniors.

Female V/O (volume still down a little): If you can hear this message, and have a mum or dad you’re concerned about, speak to St Ives Home Care for a more open conversation. We offer a range of services to help your parents stay in their own home. And we'll help you talk about aging...

Female V/O (volume back to normal): ...in a way they’ll really hear you.
