Overview
Credits
Write a short summary of what happens in the film.
This film follows a Nigerian man under Xenophobic attack in an informal settlement in South Africa. The man is seen running for his life with a blood hungry mob of South Africans following closely behind him. This terrifying image was much like those seen on the news during the time this campaign was conceptualised.
The Nigerian immigrant finds refuge in his home, where he frantically tries to get his hands on anything that can defend him from the mob, now surrounding his home. The man, after realizing that nothing can protect him from the fists and fires that await him outside, goes down on his knees and begins to pray.
As the Nigerian man recites his prayer aloud in his home language of Igbo, the translations reveal that he is reciting words that mirror those in the South African National Anthem. Demonstrating that we are in fact one people.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
In South Africa in recent years there had been a spate of xenophobic attacks taking place against many of the 4 million foreign nationals living in South Africa. This black on black violence led to the deployment of the army to deter unrest, however no amount of intervention from government could curb these violent killings.
It is important to note the cultural relevance of the South African National Anthem, Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika. It is a plea to God to “bless Africa, hear its prayers and save its people”. It used to be a protest song during apartheid for the oppressed black South Africans facing severe persecution. And now, in this film it echoes, word for word, the same plea foreign nationals have today in light of the vicious xenophobic attacks against them.
Tell the jury anything relevant about the cinematography.
The Prayer was shot using anamorphic lenses to give it that wide aspect ratio and a lovely depth of field. This also gave the piece interesting lens flares and vignettes that helped bring interest and drama to the images. Overall, the cinematography was designed to give this piece of film a very dramatic look and vividly brings to life the colours and textures of a South African township.
