BriefExplanation

"Thin Ice" illustrates the metaphorical journey of Ashley Wagner, the World silver medalist and U.S. National Champion who overcame the traumatic effects of six concussions to win an Olympic medal. The film follows her struggle and eventual triumph throughout three distinct acts. It opens on Ashley skating on a vast frozen lake, reflecting on her journey and the challenges she's encountered along the way. A dramatic fall through the ice into a dark void below represents her struggles with the effects of multiple head injuries. Her voice-over elaborates, "I thought I was done." But she refuses to give up. With a determined look, she rises back above the ice. This time, she lands her jump triumphantly as the sun rises over the mountains behind her.

EntrySummary

Ashley Wagner was the oldest female individual U.S. Olympic figure skating hopeful this season, and on top of this had overcome six debilitating concussions. She is known for her spunk and has proven to be a true fighter.

Solution

Using Ashley's descriptions from various interviews, we crafted visuals that represented her experience. After her concussions, she spoke of feeling trapped in a dark place, this silent terror. We take viewers on this journey that celebrates the ups and downs in both sport and life, the power of self-belief, and the will to emerge stronger.
