BriefExplanation
In this commercial, we adapted a well-known apartheid era speech by iconic anti-apartheid activist, Albertina Sisulu. She made this moving speech at the first anniversary of the UDF, a major anti-apartheid organization, in 1984. We changed her words, in a shocking way, and challenged listeners to imagine a world where no-one, not even Albertina Sisulu, has the guts to take a stand for what is right. In this way, the Nelson Mandela Foundation could appeal to individuals to take responsibility and help realize Mandela’s ideal of a just society.

SISULU: Sons and daughters of Africa. The apartheid regime has many armies, and I think we must accept that our time is up. The power of the people has been broken now.We have mothers here, black and white, mothers who know what it is to bring a child into this world, mothers who don’t need any more hardship. We, as women and mothers, have enough to worry about as it is. We can do nothing but look on helplessly as this government plunges our country into a blood bath.
VO: If Albertina Sisulu made this speech in 1984, who knows where we’d be today? One voice can make a difference. Use yours and help us take the Mandela legacy forward. Visit nelsonmandela.org
