BriefExplanation
In this commercial, we adapted a well-known apartheid era speech by Oliver Tambo, iconic anti-apartheid leader. Tambo made this emotional speech at a mass funeral for victims of apartheid in 1982. We changed his words, in a shocking way, and challenged listeners to imagine a world where no-one, not even Oliver Tambo, has the guts to take a stand for what is right. In this way, the Nelson Mandela Foundation could appeal to individuals to take responsibility and help realize Mandela’s ideal of a just society.
ScriptInEnglish
TAMBO: My fellow Africans, there is still time to back out. If not, we shall die thirty at a time, a hundred at a time.We are not moving forward so we must all accept that we shall never win our victory, our freedom, or the liberation of Africa. In the name of our stalwarts now languishing in the jails of the Pretoria regime, in the name of those who have fallen, we call upon the people of this land, the people of South Africa, to quit the struggle.Let us give up now because freedom will not come in our lifetime.VO: If Oliver Tambo made this speech in 1982, who knows where we’d be today?
