BriefExplanation
A man and his toddler son enter the supermarket, and as his son wanders off the father sees so many brands of pasta sauce he doesn't know where to start. Fast forward a long, long time and the dad still hasn't made up his mind – yet his hair has whitened (what's left of it) and the son barely squeezes into his boy clothes. Visitors to large grocery stores in any country might just recognize that feeling.
Solution
This script relied on a smartly crafted momentum that tricks us at first, as we follow this busy guy just grabbing a few things … then it very quickly falls apart in a hilarious and surprising way when he grows old before our eyes as he attempts to select a pasta sauce.
It needed a seamless edit, to draw the viewer in as the guy has trouble deciding. Then we reveal that he has aged for the first time, the camera is still moving with the guy as if it were just a normal thing. We give no film language cues that he is aging, we just shoot it as if a study of a man having a lot of trouble deciding on sauce because there’s far too many brands.
